I imagaine there will be several documentaries in the near future as we approach the anniversary of his murder. Watch a couple.
It really didn't effect the media as a whole so much as effect the nation as a whole. The media aspect comes into play when one considers the esteem in which we held Walter Cronkite and there he was on TV crying. Inconceivable.
Thereafter, we had days of mourning, the funeral and the burial, etc. The actual assassination took up >1% of the totality.
Be sure to watch to the funeral cortege as it made its way to Arlington. Then compare it to Ronald Reagan's more recent death (and not by shooting either.) It brings shivers. Particularly the riderless horse with the boots backwards in the stirrups and John-John saluting.

No radio or television stations broadcast the assassination live because the area through which the motorcade was traveling was not considered important enough for a live broadcast. Most media crews were not even with the motorcade but were waiting instead at the Dallas Trade Mart in anticipation of Kennedy's arrival. Those members of the media that were with the motorcade were riding at the rear of the procession.
Lee harvey Oswald was the first murder on live TV.

I don't think it was live, but it was caught on film and shown on TV later. Before all news TV presidential activities were not covered minute by minute. The murder of Lee Harvey Oswald and Bobby Kennedy was live as I recall. Television's coverage of the assassination provided evidence of the medium's power. Most Americans joined in watching coverage of the shocking and tragic events and TV news became more popular. I once heard a reporter remark that there was no real reason for the gaggle of reporters to follow the president around, since all they got was prepared handouts, and that the real reason they were there was they did not want to miss assassination attempts.
