I think it is fine for them to feed her oatmeal as well as other baby cereals. One suggestion to give is that they offer it to her (as with any new foods) for at least a 3 - 5 day period to make sure that she doesn't develop any allergies to it. I will also add, that every child develops at his/her own pace, so while your niece may just now be starting to try new cereals, other 8 month old (sometimes even younger) may be starting table foods. Parents, along with advice from their pediatricians, should decide what is best for their child and what they may or may not be ready for according to the child's personal development. I hope this helps!

Yes, they make baby oatmeal. I would be a little leary of regular oatmeal though, because the pieces of oats would probably be too thick, and could cause choking. My daughter is 8 months and hates rice cereal. Her favorite kind is the Barley made by Gerber. My pediatrician said to try rice, barley, and oat baby cereals, but to hold off on wheat cereals, since wheat is a common allergen.

Either regular or baby oatmeal is fine. Baby oatmeal is precooked and really easy to make. I just read on the website below that regular oatmeal is actually more nutritous than baby oatmeal. Just make sure that you cook it if you are using regular oatmeal and leave out any sugar, cow milk, or butter. Instead substitute water, breastmilk, or formula as the liquid. Use enough liquid for a runny consistancy.

um.. lets see my 5 month old has had anything smooshie on the dinner table and just had a slurp of an italian ice today and we totally do not go by the bull of all this... dont feed a baby til 6 or 12 months anything but breast or formula. I wonder if the docs have stock in enfamil or something. Anyway yes it is fine.. just stay away from honey for the 1st year . otherwise introduce all the smooshie foods you like ... a little bit at a time.

Yes, but they should use baby oatmeal. Regular oats are a little too coarse for a baby's stomach to digest. At 8 months, she should definitely be trying other foods.

sure...my daughter never liked rice cereal so she eats baby oatmeal. Since she is 8 months old, they can (and should!) be trying different cereals and food with her.

So your kid is on the skinny side. Why are you so worried if your doctor isn't? One thing I will mention though is that I don't see any reason for an 8 month old not to eat your regular table food unless you happen to eat salty processed stuff. My daughter is the same age and usually eats the same or a slight variation of what we're having. Some recent examples: scrambled egg yolks & whole wheat toast (give her half a sliced and she takes bites and chews) a sweet potato & pork crockpot stew (no salt, contained onions, garlic, and cardamom) quinoa + avocado & cilantro plain whole milk yogurt with bananas and blueberries tofu, zucchini, black beans, and onion + cilantro (our enchilada filing minus jalapenos & habenero cheese)

My eight month old nephew eats oatmeal and loves it! But he has two teeth on the bottom and almost all his teeth up top.

I was giving my daughter regular oatmeal at that age. I just overcooked it so it was extra soft and then let it cool in the fridge. I then gave it to her in bite-sized chunks that she fed to herself.
