Neither Gateway or Dell or Acer are computer manufacturers They are computer composers. Their computers have parts from IBM or Intel or AMD or many others ,so their name does not guaranty a good performance.Basically in laptops the rule is ....the more money the better.Go to an online computer store like newegg.com and search laptops by entering your price range. You can also check reviews from other users that bought the product. My opinion is AMD based computers are better for gaming.Light gaming though because a gaming laptop cost allot more than $550.

Since, you want to spend around $500 then the major manufacturer's new laptops at the bottom of their product lines typically start around $500. If you want a GB of RAM you will spend more. You might look at the minimum systems requirements on WarRocks website to see what hardware and software is needed.

If you stick with HP, Dell, Acer, Lenovo (formerly IBM), and Toshiba, who are the top five manufacturers of laptops then you can't go wrong. Each company makes millions of laptops each year and they are all Billion dollar companies with organizations in place to design, sell and support their products. Dell does the most marketing, so is the best known to consumers, but if you were to ask my techs who have been servicing laptops for years they are not the best made. IBM and Toshiba are the best made with HP next and are very well know and respected in the corporate world. However, this is relative as most parts are made by third parties and the laptops are often built by third parties.

Watch the ads in your Sunday paper. Here, we get ads every week from Office Max, Office Depot, Best Buy, Circuit City, Office Depot -- with weekend specials and really good buys at holiday time. Of course they are intended to get you into the store.

I consider Dell, HP, Compaq to be good. You want to buy from the dealer that offers good support -- it is as important as the price, trust me.

Because I was looking for a "deal," I picked up - on a weekend special -- a Toshiba laptop with Vista, but only 512mb RAM. I am in the process of getting another 512mb chip. I bought the Toshiba because it was an in-store special for $399 with a free printer. So far, so good, however, I know from personal experience that Dell and HP offer good support.

When you buy, if you get Vista, 1gb should do it, providing you don't run 10 programs at a time. First, make a list of what you absolutely need, then look. Don't buy more bells and whistles than you will ever use.

Brand can but does not always come into play....what you want to look for is the most "bang for your buck"....largest hard drive, max memory and features you are looking for that you can afford....places like tigerdirect.com and newegg have the best deals for any and all PC stuff.
