SO HAPPY to hear about your plans and interest in learning more about your roots! anyway, here goes:

"As for the question of quality of Philippine medical schools, according to the International Medical Education Quarterly Volume 1, No. 2 Summer 2003, "Medical schools in The Philippines have been the source of a large number of physicians who come to the United States for graduate medical education and the practice of medicine."

The publication further notes: "Currently, there are 32 Philippine medical schools listed in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED), 30 of which are operating and 2 of which are closed. Three of the currently operating medical schools have been identified by the Philippines Commission on Higher Education as 'Centers of Excellence' and one as a 'Center of Development' based "on their track record, performance in the licensure examination and excellent faculty… The Centers of Excellence are at the University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas and the Cebu Institute of Medicine. The Center of Development is at Xavier University."

OF FURTHER INTEREST, ESPECIALLY TO ABC AND ITS SEARCH FOR DRAMATIC DIVERSITY MATERIALS, IS THE FACT THAT HARVARD UNIVERSITY'S MEDICAL SCHOOL WAS FIRST INTEGRATED IN 1937 BY A FILIPINA, DR. FE DEL MUNDO, WHO, AS A SCHOLAR ADMITTED TO THE PRESTIGIOUS MEDICAL SCHOOL FOR SOME GRADUATE COURSES, FORGOT TO REMIND THE THEN-ALL MALE DEPARTMENT SUCH IRRELEVANCY AS THE FACT THAT SHE IS FEMALE.

I'm recommending CIM because, of course, of the quality of education, it being one of the three centers of excellence, and because cebu is really a beautiful place. it's not as populated as manila, but not as laid-back as davao. it's in between. cebu city is very urban with the malls and other places to hang out in, but the white sand beaches are just minutes away! :)

P.S: Words spewing out from mouths of prejudiced, IGNORANT, ill-informed and careless individuals who actually believe in the words spewing out from equally prejudiced, IGNORANT, ill-informed and careless FICTITIOUS CHARACTERS are obviously and inarguably not worth listening to. (this is an understatement, but oh well, i am kind to animals.)

Amidst all the bruhaha regarding the episode on desperate housewives, our health care professionals here in the Philippines are world class. We have been sending nurses not just in the US but also abroad. We have very good physicians working here and abroad.
If you are interested to study here in Metro Manila, Aside from the University of the Philippines, you can apply at the Universirty of Santo Tomas, Far Eastern University, Universiy of the East Ramon Magsaysay Medical schools: those are just a few of the best. Google them and inquire.

hahaha Ateneo,, that's hilarious ok like my answer to the other peson who asked a quesiotn about which school he should go to, i said my school. UST. as mentioned in the first two answers. but!!! The other schools that were mentioned are not far behind. medical schools that offer that course should have a hospital that you could practice or work or train on for real, naturally. UERMMH, St. Lukes, UP has PGH. all you have to do is decide.

Iloilo Doctors hospital is in the top 10 in the country. We have quite a few foreign students from all over here. We are in the Visayas (Region 6) on Panay island.
Lots cheaper than Manilla or Cebu and you can get a quality education here.

There are a lot of med schools in Manila: UP Manila, UST, etc.

Try De La Salle Dasma Health & Sciences Campus. It's a nice place to study. Very nice environment close to Manila

Here, check this website: www.dasma.dlsu.edu.ph

EDIT--- and please, don't listen to a pessimistic guy. Filipino healthcare professionals are very much in demand abroad, not just in the US.

Mi Amiga. If you are abroad I'd rather you not come to the PHilippines. It's the place where you easily get corrupted by our evil culture.

But if you want to land in WoWoWie, you're it. Be all you want to be. Our med school was trashed by Terri Hatchet. She's a Filipina. I cannot fault Terri for outing the general feeling of the Amerikanos about the quality of our med school.

With leakages and cheating in nursing exam, you'll do well in passing the exam

I think that UP Manila and UST are both highly respectable in those fields. Yet i go for UP.
