You put an ice cube in the indent and then using a hairdryer melt the ice and dry the carpet out whilst rubbing at the spot with a brush (stiff plastic bristles like a nailbrush).
It does work, daft as it sounds.

In general it has more to do with the quality of the carpet whether you will ever get it up. And the overall weight of the piece. You can try everything everyone has suggested but in the end you may have to replace the carpet. Fibers just break down. Good luck.

Put a damp rag over the indents then use a hot clothes iron and iron them right out. Works almost every time.

Take a penny and rub over the area to get the fabric loosened, and then use a scrub brush and a little carpet cleaner to restore it.

WOW...Ive been trying to do this most of today!!! Except mine was a fish tank!
Ive hoovered...brushed...pulled....screamed at....sprayed carpet mouse cleaner on (hoping fibres would lift) and Ive managed to raise it about a cm!!!!!!

I rent a flat so I have to be able to get it to go back how it was....i shall watch this question and learn from all the brainy people out there!

Take a dinner fork and loosen up the pile, scratch in the opposite direction that the pile is laying, and pull it back up.
