I think they can be compared, old school gangsta versus new age punk or classic audrey hepburn versus pamela anderson...I'm just wondering whether people prefer the relaxed stud-look with sunglasses & bandana or hyper punk- look with a color-coordinated outfit & helmet?:-D

re:yeah, a bit stereo-typing there.I have seen non-stereotypical riders, but usually have seen the typicals in my area.I was trying to say which is the better chick magnet. don't guys sometimes use the woman as a bike accessory;) I think both bikes are hot. One makes me go...Yowzaaa!! and the other makes me...Waaoww!!

"Harley made in the USA..." out of Chinese parts. Even Buell figured out that they can't make a competitive engine and turned to Rotax for their powerplant. Rotax makes engines for Can-Am and Aprilia.
Harleys are a dime a dozen. Everyone has a freakin' Harley, and the only thing left is the NAME and the IMAGE, and the people who fell for the hype. There are other manufacturers like Victory that make a better bike and only custom choppers are aesthetically unique anymore.
On the flip side, everyone has a freakin' Gixxer or an R6. Every wannabe squid asks the same tired question about getting a racebike for their first one, and don't understand the capabilities or the consequences of such a choice.
For speed and handling, no cruiser can even come CLOSE to a sportbike. It's like comparing an old Ford Bronco with worn C-bushings to a Formula 1 car! There is a CONNECTION with a sportbike that you just don't get with an 800-lb, two-wheeled motor home; like it's an extension of your body instead of something you ride.
So for riding, it's sportbikes all the way for me. As for looks, there are beautiful bikes in both camps, and I love looking at all of them. However, the limited Ducati Desmosedici RR superbike is sex on wheels! It looks fast just sitting there, and the overall design is so organic you'd swear it was alive.

All right, seems like the question needs to be asked!! Are you asking this question because you have no idea about harleys and want to buy one. Or are you asking this question to start a debate. I think you know that No answer or response will be the same, as owning a harley is personal preference, if you want to buy the hottest Harley is the one that YOU like the most. In MY OPINION the new 2008 Fat Bob is pretty cool. Cheers Andrew

Now with your additional details you are stereotyping.
Unfortunately most people that have to have the matching gear for either do tend to be posers. However, there is a wide sector like myself that do not care what you ride, as long as you like riding and you didn't buy a motorcycle as a status symbol, or compensation for some personal issue.
I've owned 6 bikes over the years and all of them were not about status, but what I enjoyed riding at the time and fit my riding style and experience at the time. I probably ride nearly 10,000 miles a year on bikes, and I like them all with the exception of the current H-D company. I do not like a company that has 40% to 50% markup on their bikes and 200% to 300% markup on accesories and their clothing, and plays the market by limited production to keep prices high on products that only have moderate performance.

I think the Harley is hotter, cuz now that people buying Harley not only buy the vehicle but buy a kind of life. I meet many friends on a site called bikerkiss. They say that Harley can make them enjoy the life.

No preference. Nothing to base one on.
I ride HD, never been on a Duc.
I remember the poster on the old bike shop wall.....
the Desmodromic valve system. Rocker to open and rocker to close - no valve springs, positive operation at all speeds.
Never saw a reference to ignition timing. Vacuum advance and retard have been around a long time.
Chick magnet? Not only did I never need one, I'm married.
And sorry, Tom, but I never qualified as over weight at 135#.
Mom did say I was a fat baby, though.

Everyone's opinion will differ. It also will depend on who you're trying to impress. If you're in with a bunch of burly bikers, go with a Harley. If you're riding with a bunch of Ducati enthusiasts, get the 999.
If it were me, though, I would go with the Ducati. It is a very refined bike that has been perfected over generations of research and development. It is a BEAUTIFUL piece of machinery.

I rode a Ducati once, it was a 1970 250cc model.
Ducati has the Desmodromic ignition, which is really wonderful , but few people understand.
Ducati Desmodromic has a vacuum line running from the intake manifold to the distributpr cap. The ignition starts at "top-dead-center" at low RPM, but as the RPM's increase, the vacuum retards the timing.
This allows for very impressive acceleration without "back-fireing".
But I've never ridden a Harley Davidson, so it's not a fair comparison.
The Ducatti Desmo' was a forerunner of modern ignition computers, but the beauty of it was that is was all mechanical.

Firecracker is the man
I like sportbikes for their performance, not the style or image or because one is 'hotter' than the other. I couldn't give a sh!t less. Either one is gonna pull chicks.

Totally the Ducati! More style, more speed, more handling, more racing history, more refinement, more engineering, more class.
Honestly, this is like asking which is better between a Ford Mustang or a Ferrari. They aren't even in the same class!
