Sorry - couldn't resist.
The political, economic/social causes of the revolution were based in the huge disparity between the upper classes and the lower classes. The royals were certainly at the helm, but they were not the sole cause. If anything, they were innocent victims because they were so isolated from the people that they truly didn't know the desperate conditions under which some of them existed. But the upper classes did - and didn't care.
Overthrowing the monarchy and setting up the people's regime, with equality for all, turned everything topsy turvy in France - but it gave them the opportunity to make a clean start. Too many European countries tried (and are still trying) to blend monarchy and democarcy and it isn't a smooth mix.
The outside world watched with interest as the events in France unfolded, and in many cases provided the spark that set off other fights for independence and for overturning the monarchy.
