Obligations are supposed to be paid but if you cannot really pay, you have to declare for bankruptcy.

Yes they can. If they get a judgment against you, they can put a lien on certain property and assets of yours.

In most states, there is some homestead protection to keep them from literrally taking your house. Pensons are generally protected as well.

OJ Simpson is a good example of what happens. A lawsuit by the Goldmans against OJ ended with a multi-million dollar judgment against him. He moved to Florida, which has generous homestead laws that allow him to live in a mansion that they can't get to. They also cannot get his lucrative NFL pension.

They did, however, get assets like his Heisman trophy and other property they can sell and keep the proceeds to settle the judgment. The Goldmans secured rights to the book he just wrote and can profit from the sale of that book as well. The Goldmans are interested in the stuff OJ said was stolen in Vegas because they constitute assets that they should be able to sell to receive the proceeds from.

You will need a lawyer to help you resolve your own personal issues as it gets rather complicated what they can have and what they cannot have in each state.
