I think of m as standing for "move" and b for "begin." This relates to the way you graph linear equations by hand. You can use the b value to plot the "beginning" point (0,b). Then the m value instructs you where to "move" from point (0,b) to plot the next point, thus giving you the line for the equation.

y = mx + b

You "move" along the slope --> m
You "begin" at the y-intercept --> b

y = mx + b

y= 2x + 6

Always think of the number in front of the x as a fraction, so 2/1 in this case. If it is already a fraction, great. This is your rise over run, or slope. The rise is the only value affected by being either positive or negative. So the graph for this equation would be y int. at positive six. From this point move up two units and to the right one. If the equation was y = -2x + 6, then you would move from your y int. of positive six, down two units, but still move to the right one.

the letter "S" comes before the letter "Y" in the alphabet! i would remember it by knowing it's alphabetically. sorry it isn't really a mnemonic device but it could help you! hope i helped
