Do you mean a Senior Center or Adult Daycare? Most people are not aware that they are two different things. Let me explain the difference and you make the decision which is best suited.

A Senior Center is a socialization experience for those aged 60 and up. It is a place where they go to meet and become friends with other Seniors. At a Senior Center there are many activities such as bingo, daytrips, table games, volunteerism, and of course, the daily lunches. There usually is no charge for most of the activities. Lunches are charged a small amount per person and are nutritionally balanced according to FDA guidelines.

Adult Daycare Centers are different. You may or may not have to be referred to them. These Centers are for elders who have physical, mental or emotional problems such as dementia or Alzheimer's Disease. They are staffed by persons who have training to work with the aging population who have these problems. Persons attending Adult Daycare Centers are supervised at all times. Activities offered range from games, arts and crafts, and some even have gardens. Lunches and snacks are served. Many of these Centers are Medicare subsidized.

If I were you, I would call the Agency on Aging. Their National Hotline Number is 1-800-510-2020. Your call will be automatically directed to the office nearest you. They will be able to tell you where the nearest Senior Center is located and give other information. They also know where the Adult Daycare Centers are located and whether or not you need a referral.

Good Luck and God bless you for your caring attitude for your Dad.

I ran a Senior Citizen church group for about a year. We had hot lunch every day through a contract with the City, played bingo, had art classes, light exercise, etc. Started at 8:00 a.m. and lasted until 1:00 p.m. What a great group! Try a local church. (By the way, it didn't matter what religion you were or what race or nationality your were. You just had to prove you were 60 or over.)

Adult daycare can make a nice transition to an assisted living situation. For a full time caregiver who is burning out having the senior go get cared for during the day can keep them going.
We have a Jewish retirement/assisted living/nursing home here that is wonderful. A woman had her dad living with her and would bring him to their adult day care one day a week. He reconnected with his friends he hadn't seen in 60 years. Then when she placed him in the assisted living he had all his friends. When the assisted living people need more care they move them to another floor. In the assisted living husbands and wifes can stay together. All the younger generation supports it with donations so it is luxury living as much as can be in that situation.
If I was Jewish I would want to go there.

Call your local Chamber of Commerce & ask them where the Senior Centers are located. It's a great way for your dad to get out, meet others, & have fun. I'm assuming they have all kinds of activites to keep them busy.
