I've heard stories that Disk Defragmenting can destroy your unit itself. How possible is that?
In my case almost every week/month i'm using it but it's not happening, thus my unit slows down. My other questions are why and how?

It is pretty safe. Only one file is moved at a time and the original is not deleted until the move is completed. I now have Norton 360 and it automatically does it in the background.

Given that defragmenters move data, it is always possible that something could go wrong and the data either become corrupted through an incomplete write (power outage, harddisk crash?). If the read/write/verify routines got corrupted, you could end up with lost data, or at worst a dead computer. BUT, defragmenters have been used for a long time, with minimal failures, so the risk is very low, but it is there.

I have heard of other utilities trashing a harddrive, but you will have to find someone else who knows of defragmenting going awry, because I don't.

The defragmenter does its job best when its not interrupted by any other program while running, hence its best to run it in safe mode. The risk probably is if the power goes off while the defrag is taking place since its essentially moving file fragments around to put them together.

No disk defragment is actually health for your system. Yes you will notice a slow down but that because of system resources needed to do it. I defrag my pc's daily and I work in IT for 20+ years.

If the hard drive is already going bad defrag can finish it off just by the heavy use it puts to it.
