im reading is geneology of morals but im a little confused.
according to him where did guilt and conscience come from?
it has to be more than a "debt" as he claims. because if i were to kill a person with no punishment, i for one would feel bad. not because of retribution. but because i caused a great suffering.

I think the first answer is on the mark.
But as to feeling bad if we killed someone. Feelings are notoriously changeable. If we see a beggar, we might feel sympathy but by turning our eyes away, it won't be long before we don't even see the beggar.
