Private schools consistently outperform government schools both on tests and college placement. Just like most things the government tries to monopolize, public schools are failures and we shouldn't fund them anymore.
To g -- You don't know of anywhere that private school has worked for the majority? Many western European countries attach money to the children, not to schools. That way parents are free to choose which of the (mostly private) schools their kids will go to based on the school's performance. If the parents don't like a school, they can send their kids to another one because all of the schools compete for the money attached to the kids. By the way, they consistently outperform us in both tests and college placement. So yes, it does work, like most free market ideas.

We already have a socialized education system. It's mandated that all must pay into it and all must attend. Currently it produces two products. The first, are those moving on to higher education. The second, those who are not. The latter is indoctrinated into a workforce but given no discernable marketable skills. They graduate (or drop out) and enter the market at or below minimum wage (waitresses are not paid minimum wage). They have very little hope of hitting it off right away and will most likely NOT get a job with a good benefits package.
The fault is not that of the teachers -- they all graduate from accredited institutions and are licensed by whichever state they ply their trade. It's not the fault of the administrations (although I feel they are grossly over paid -- God Bless America and capitalism!), they too have all graduated from accredited institutions and are licensed by the state.
So, why then are our public schools not a smashing success universally? Could it be the teachers union? The union refused to accept and institute the "No Child Left Behind" program that would pay a small reward to teachers whose students do well in school. -- Don't look now, but slowly and quietly, a few rouge teachers and school systems are beginnning to warm up to, accept and institute the plan (with success!). Could it be the parenting? Students whose parents do not take an active interest in their child's future and their current studies? Nah....

Republicans have been trying to privatize our public schools for years. And they've had some small successes too. Tests are now written by corporations and it's a billion dollar industry. NCLB will also help them achieve their goal of privatizing our schools. When a school fails the NCLB standardized tests twice, their funding is cut. Schools that perform poorly need MORE funding not less. Republicans want to privatize our schools because the rich already send their kids to private schools. So they're paying twice. They pay once for their kids to go to private school and through taxes pay for our kids to go to school. If Republicans ensure our schools fail, its saves the rich even more money. But vouchers won't be enough to cover the expense of a private school and so the poor and middle class will either have to work more to pay for their child's education or not send them to school at all. This will "create kids for the factories," or uneducated workers who will settle for any job that will hire them. It's called "starve the beast." And it's a Republican tactic of spend and borrow with no way to pay, leaving the only alternative being to cut government programs like public education. And the rich get richer...

Public education in America is a train wreck. We fall further behind the rest of the world each year & yet costs continue to rise.
The Democrats seem to think that sex ed is more important than discipline, math, english, & science because it seems sex ed is all they talk about. Specifically sex-ed for pre-K kids so that they will be more receptive to homosexuality.
The Republicans on the other hand believe the only way to clean up this train wreck is with competition. I agree & the best competition against a public school is a nearby private one.

oh... plenty of Republcians are... as you can see...
now... I don't know of a place where only private education has worked well for the majority of the population... as the poor usually are extremely undersereved in these areas...
so... I would like to see it actually work somewhere before we try it...
imagine 44 million Americans with no education... just like they don't have healthcare? even the worst public schools in America are better than nothing...
EDIT: hmm... private schools that have kids from well-to-do families that have every educational opportunity available to them do better than poor children that have text books from the 50s at public schools and no home encouragement?
wow... that's a miracle private school isn't it? I wonder how they do better?

privatizing education, would be a healthy alternative to what we have now. It doesn't mean that part of it has to be theological. That could be optional. At the least, by making schools compete for students would make the quality of education higher.

Schools are already socialized the government control them.
Look up H1-B VISAS and you will see one reason they want to knock the U.S. Schools down. They want to bring in educated forgien workers who work for less. So by lowering the student education levels in the USA big Corporations get what they want.
For better Schools the USA needs to follow the college studies on best prastices for schools.
That means going back to the 1950 and 1960 Teaching methods for the Elementray schools except for science labs, ART and Music.
Kids learn reading skills, math and science better when they are facing the teacher and listening.

We could do worse than Private schools, but there aren't nearly enough of them in the country to accomplish such a task!
Conservatives accuse Liberals of simply trying to throw money at the problem, but as yet nobody has done it. I actually would like to throw some money at the problem, since we've thoroughly tried underfunding and it hasn't worked. What if the problem really is just a lack of money? Even if it doesn't work after a few years, we'll have that aspect of the argument settled, and can move on to other approaches.

Our socialized educational system is broken. The liberal idea to fix it is to throw money at it. It is insane. We have thrown so much money at our educational system that it is bloated and crippled with bureaucracy.
School vouchers would be good, otherwise the best thing we could is cut the administration jobs by about 2/3.
