They might want to check on just what a theory is.

It is an explanation of known facts, that is consistent with other facts, and which has predictive value. Ideally, a significant number of these predictions will have been found to be true since the theory was first proposed. This makes the theory an even stronger predictive tool.

Evolution meets all these criteria, and more.

You should explain to this person the significance of a scientific theory, and the way it differs from the everyday use of the word theory.

If the person is brainwashed or bases his/her beliefs on what the church tells him to think, let him know you can still believe in the bible and not take everything literally. He can still be a Christian and also believe in basic scientific knowledge.

How about

"Good job!"

Theories are just theories. it is not proven and cannot be proven. There is evidence to the contrary which gets conveniently left out when proposing it. Such as the fact that no intermediate species of homosapiens is still in existence. That there are no next step species seen in any animal. Only in some viruses and bacteria. However, those would hardly fit the definition of evolution

I would say someone who chooses not to accept evolution at face value is an individual who is willing to think for themselves instead of just go along with the masses.

I agree with Science Geek entirely, there is nothing you can do to change anyone's mind who only wants to believe in the creationism theory and isn't willing to look at both of the arguments impartially.

Don't waste your time. One can only refute the mechanisms of evolution or the idea of abiogenesis. Evolution is a fact. Attempting to explain this to people who just don't want to hear the truth is a waste of your time. Nothing you tell them will change their mind.

People don't believe in the theory of evolution because their church tells them not to.

The theory of evolution IS true, its being proven by animals at this very moment. People don't want to believe it because it implies that we descended from monkeys.

I'm Christian, and I don't believe that we evolved from monkeys. But I do believe that other animal species do evolve.

Hope that helps somewhat, your question was phrased wierd.

tell them to stop floating under the ceiling, because gravity is just a theory too.

And direct them to this website if they have a sense of humor:

and to this if they have not (even official creationist websites will tell people that this is not a good argument)

Go and collect fossils from long vanished animals, when they dig and find the bones and teeth and hold them in their hands they will believe. Threre has to be a fossil club in your state, join in and have fun.

its a theory, just like everything else

i personally don't believe in it to the extent that people say it is. But i do believe in it. Basically, to make them see the idea, just ask them why we have an appendex

First of all I'd tell them it's not a theory, it's a fact.
