I am twelve weeks, going on thirteen weeks, pregnant with twins. I have always heard that a twin pregnancy last anywhere from 34-37 weeks which is eight months. Can a twin pregnancy last 40 weeks which is nine months?

Yes, but you don't want to do that. Trust me. My doc never intended on me going past 36 weeks because that is full term for twins. I went to 34 and was completely, totally miserable by 30 weeks. They were getting bigger and it was harder every day. Like many twin moms, I had complications and ended up on bedrest. Way to go to all the women who carried to 40, but most twin moms I know, even those with no problems just wanted them out as soon as it was safe because it really is difficult the bigger you get. By 32 weeks the babies' combined weight was over 9 lbs. I can't imagine how big they would have been had I made it to 40. I once read a theory that suggested multiples may actually have a bit of accelerated development in the 3rd trimester. The cramped quarters in the womb signal that it may be time to leave soon and the bodies compensate so they will be ready for life on the outside earlier. The main support for this is that multiples born around 30-34 weeks often fair better than their singlteton counterparts. I don't know if it's true, but it's a nice thought.

I am the mother of beautiful boy-girl twins who are now 12 years old. I delivered at 32 weeks. I really followed all of my Dr.'s orders in an attempt to make it to at least 35 weeks. I read up on twins as soon as I found out I was expecting. Every single day in the womb makes a difference. But some things are out of our control. My daughter's water broke and that was that. I had them completely naturally, although I didn't plan on that either. They were a decent weight 4lbs 4oz. and 4lbs. 2 oz. Most other mothers of twins who I have met, also gave birth early. I have met 2 who made it to 40 weeks. They did nothing that differed from the rest of us early deliverers, that we can think of. It might be just the difference in body type or the babies' dispositions that made the difference. My children did remain in he hospital for about 3 weeks after they were born. They breathed on their own but had some apnea. Today they are healthy, happy, and tall! I wish you a 40 week pregnancy, but if it is shorter, you will just get to have those wonderful kids with you all the sooner. Good Luck!

the medical world does not know why people who are carrying twins go into premature labor. they do believe its because of space, ability for ur body to provide for the growing babies, etc, but they just dont know for sure. a twin pregnancy can last just as long as a normal pregnancy with the right conditions, heredity plays a factor also. (how long ur past family members have carried twins) the best possible scenario is for it to last at least 36 weeks if you can b/c thats when the babies' lungs are finally reaching maturity. plain and simple.....u cant determine when they are ready to come out, they will. and yes it is possble for you to be even OVER DUE!! good luck

It is possible I've heard of a couple going to 38 weeks. A baby will do very well at 34 weeks if born so dont worry.

Here are seven very early signs of pregnancy to look out for. 1. Breast Tenderness This is a tricky one, because your boobs could also be hurting due to where you are in your cycle. But having sore tatas could very well mean you've got a bun in the oven too. 2. Unexplained Mood Swings And when I say mood swings, I mean mood swings. About two weeks after my son was conceived, my husband picked up barbecue takeout on his way home from work, and he forgot the potato salad. 3. Feeling "Funny" I know this one sounds pretty general, but that's because the definition of "feeling funny" varies from woman to woman. Immediately after I got pregnant, I just felt "off" -- and not like myself at all. If something doesn't feel quite right to you, it's not your imagination -- you might be pregnant. 4. Weird Abdominal Pain This is likely due to implantation, and I know I experienced it for sure. For me, it felt different than menstrual cramps -- almost like really, really bad gas. I couldn't explain it at the time, but obviously there were changes happening in my belly. 5. Vaginal Discharge Again, this happens to a lot of women anyway during their menstrual cycles, but a white, milky discharge could be a result of your vagina's walls thickening due to conception. 6. Extreme Fatigue Feeling tired all of a sudden even though you got plenty of sleep? Well, your body is going through a lot of hormone changes right after you conceive, and it's forming all those new cells, so feeling tired makes total sense. 7. Food Aversions or Cravings Back to the potato salad incident -- I HAD to have that potato salad, so I'm guessing this was my earliest pregnancy craving. Also, the smell of certain foods, like eggs, made me gag, when they hadn't ever before.

i was just talking to a coworker who's had 4 kids, her last pregnancy being twins. she went past her due date and each twin was over 9 lbs! so yes, twin pregnancies can go to term, and be big babies!

it is possible, but with multiples, you are already a high risk patient. it puts a lot of work on your liver and kidneys to maintain a high risk pregnancy, so i'm sure you may come early or need to be induced or even schedule a c-section before your due date.

Remember that technically premature babies are anything before 34 weeks, so after that is not premature.

It's definitely possible. It's just you are at a higher risk of delivering earlier when you have twins. I hope you get to your due date!! Good luck.
