Each breast feeding experience is different. I have 4 children, all breast fed as babies, the youngest 2 until they self-weaned at 11 months and 14 months. I wore breast pads in the beginning for my first baby, but around 3 months I didn't really need them, so I'd only wear them if I knew it was going to be longer than unusual in between nursings. I bought breast pads for my second baby, but only used them a couple weeks. He took to nursing like a trooper, but was a strong nurser. I developed a cracked nipple followed by mastitis so I had to wear pads until that cleared up since I couldn't nurse on the one side for awhile. My 3rd and 4th babies, I used breast pads occasionally, but I rarely leaked. My oldest daughter (now 28) and her husband had a baby on April 15. She breast feeds and wears breast pads all the time. She is a teacher and pumps at work, so she wears them to avoid any potential embarrassing wet spots. She teaches 3rd graders.

Not neccesarily. I had TONS of milk, and even donated 16-20 ounces a day to another baby for 4.5 months. I needed breast pads on a regular basis during that time. Once I got on a schedule, this mellowed (thank goodness). Everyone is different. I do have to suggest that you try Lasinoh pads. They are thin (discreet), and can hold plenty!! Good for you for breastfeeding, that is wonderful!!

Although it is a good idea to wear breast pads, specially during the first few months, your breasts won't leak if you constantly empty them. That means letting your baby breastfeed or use a breast pump when you feel full. Rmember to alternate breast when breastfeeding (i.e. if you let your baby breastfeed on the right for 5mins and on the left for 2 mins., the next time breastfeed on the left for 5 mins.

I don't any more, now my milk has regulated, I don't drip everywhere. Until then, I found the organic cotton night pads to be invaluable! (google them) They're expensive, but they do the job. During the day I just used the thin ones you get from normal shops. If they were all in the wash I used disposables, but I don't like them much. They wouldn't sit in my bra properly and would bunch. Good to have a spare packet though, just in case.

When you first start breastfeeding you might need to but as time goes by you should be fine with out them. They tend to only leak if you miss a feeding or are late.

Yes. I found that if I didn't wear a bra (or camisol) with the breast pads, I was always wet! Especially at night. It's not exactly glamorous, but it's what you have to do!

You won't leak all the time, but it is definately a good idea to wear them if you don't want your boobs leaking all over your shirt.
