A girl at 12 is going through puberty and any assistance in self esteem is wonderful for her. I would gather a range of products such as a lovely scented deodorant, beauty soaps, perfumes, skin lotions etc, brushes and hair care products and any other items to enhance her wellbeing in a pretty toiletry bag. These items will be her personal use only and this will encourage her to care about what is happening to her body at this stage of her life.
If it is a male of 12 then I would buy something for outside use....some sport item that he is interested in. Build with him a Billy Cart ..that way you both get pleasure from it and he will appreciate it more as he worked on it.

HSM is an awesome fad,even i like it.hsm dolls,soundtrack, movie, anything HSM!
some kids are in to virtual pets.tamagotchi,gigapets, webkinz, the like.
if they are like me,they hate pokemon.AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS!
girls enjoy daiaries,make-up,male celebrity posters,alot of other things.
boys enjoy superhero things,pranking (non-harmful!) stuff,female celebrity posters,several other things.
if the birthday isnt soon,just watch him/her.ask questions.find out things like their fave shows,games,things like that.just gather all the info you can about what they like!you may find out exactly what they want!

Get him a sketch pad and some different rez pencils. Poeple love to draw... Or at least doodle when they're bored.

Depending on what he/she likes, your going to want to go for one angle to anothe, like if he likes trucks, get him hot wheels, if he/she likes electronics, get him a cheap Mp3 for $20.00 bucks, like a Coby or SanDisk. AND, if he/she likes something like movies or books, get him the one he likes...
......If these dont help, get him/her a Gift card to the store he/she's always screaming about going too.

if it a girl get her a diary my 12 year old flipped when we gave her one if its a boy most sports things or find him a poster of his fav game or movie
