I haven't written fanfic in a while, but for me it was a fun sort of escapism -- much like the show itself (I wrote for TV fandoms), but I controlled the plot. I suppose I lived through it to the extent that all writers live through their work. If you're asking whether it consumed my every waking moment, the answer is no.

Most people do. (I come out with a bunch of fanfics, but never do anything with them), and most of them are what would people change if they were in the story and had the powers of our choosing. Like, if the main character does something really stupid, what could you do as a character in the book to prevent it?
