If I get a job and start making money. I'm currently a senior in highschool, and I currently stay home with my mom. I get disability becuase of my asthma and I was wondering if they would cut off my disability check if I get a job? I figure they wouldn't since I am now 18 and there only going to be counting my paycheck which won't be a lot since I'm in highschool. but I just need some clarification on this.

to elaborate on my issue more, the biggest reason why I got disability is becuase I used to be in learning disability classes up into 6th grade in middle school. I got switch into regular classes(7th grade) becuase of my performance but this was not reported to social security so they think that I still have a learning disability. I was having a conversation with my mother and she said that they could possibly cut it off if I get a job. but I don't see how they could do that unless they know how well I function plus I'm only going to me making like $6.50 per hour. I think it's crazy but could they possibly send someone to spy on me while on the job if they found out I had one to see how well I function?

So, you've been drawing Child SSI...
You will face at least a reduction as SSI is resource/income based. What you can do is enter into the "ticket to work" program where SSA allows you to try to work and keep your benefits for a set period of time. Call and ask them about it.
You may also try to find a job where the employer will work with you and give you special considerations. This is called "sheltered" work and has its own set of rules.
Also, if you earn under $830 month, you are not reaching what the SSA considers to be "substantial gainful employment" and the income does not count against you. However, if you are earning right at that amount consistently, you will be pulled for review and face the possibility of being charged with an overpayment and losing your benefits.
Good luck!

If you took a job as an aerobics coach they'd probably whip the asthma money off you but not of you take a job that someone with genuine asthma can handle which you will because you have genuine asthma, right?
There are a lot of people on here concerned that work will cost them their benefits. If the benefit is no longer required because you work then you shouldn't get it, if it is there for other reasons the it won't be affected by having a job or not. Please don't let loss of benefits stop you looking for a job if you are capable of doing one. Everyone loses that way.
So why does an asthmatic get benefits? If it is to pay for expensive medication it will be unaffected by a job. If it is to help out with living expenses because you can't work then either prove them wrong and get a job and proudly stop the benefits or you can't work and you get the benefit.

I think that they will not be cut off. Can you imagine an America where millions of disabled and elderly people no longer have incomes? Who would feed and house them? Many SS disability checks are for dependent children. What would happen to them? I am hopeful that our leaders (Republican and Democrat) have the sense not to let this happen.

Hi! If you are 18 you sure have a lot to learn about the world. Can you imagine losing your disability, and telling the agent, someone on yahoo answers said it was okay. Think about it for a minute or two. You have a very delicate situation, no one here has access to you medical records. Please don't listen to anyone here. Go talk to a disability lawyer. They will be able to tell you all of your options. One mistake could cost you for life.

If you can work, then get a job.
The last I knew, SS has a 9-month trial period where you can earn as much as you want and still get disability, to see if working is ok for you. Otherwise you can't make over like $500/mo. and still get it. Depending on your circumstances...

There are ways to go to work while recieving social security disablity. Your local social security office should have appropriate pamphlets on this subject. Also the National 800 number could answer any questions you may have . I suggest contacting social security.

The general rule is "if you can work , you do not need disability " .
But disability is based on previous income ,
HOW did they do that for you ?
Regardless , too complicated for us , ask S S .

well let's put it this way, you are already committing Social Security Fraud so if you get caught you will be owing a lot
of money, Asthma is a medical condition and if you can
go to school all day, you can get a job all day.
