To be clear, I'm talking an Artful Dodger hat (probably grubby, scuffed-up and a little bit dented), not a satin Fred-Astaire-type thing. I have a sewing machine and a certain amount of design sense, but no expertise. Anyone out there done this kind of thing before and it turned out well? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Why don't you go to a tuxedo rental place and ask to buy an old one? I got one for about $6.

Her's a paper top hat to beat up to look like the Artful Dodger's hat.

Paper Top Hat

Paper Plate
Glue
Construction Paper
Instructions:
Paint the paper plate black. Once the paint is dry, cut out the center of the paper plate. Leave the outside rim about 2 inches thick.

Cut a piece of black construction paper to approximately 8-inches by 8 inches. Tape this into the circle you cut out of the paper plate so as much as possible sticks out through the top of the plate.

I would start with some of that cardboard paper that they have in the school isle (you know, the big sheet that you did projects on and for yard sales). Try cutting some and forming it into the shape of a top hat. Then paste some material on the hat. It's cheap and if you mess it up then you can just start over without too much fuss.

Take the pic to a fabric store and look through the patterns; you can probably find something similar. Be advised, this type of design is not for a beginning sewer. I don't know if you are or not, but I'm just saying.
