speed = distance / time
so time = speed / distance
so steve would have taken 12/8 hrs = 1 1/2 hrs
and for adam 12/6 = 2 hrs
so 1/2 hrs is the difference

Steve ran the 12 miles in 1 hr and 30 minutes (12/8=1.5)
Adam ran the 12 miles in 2 hrs (12/6=2)
Adam took an extra 30 minutes to complete the race (2 hrs - 1:30 hrs)

Steve ran 12 miles at 8 miles per hour.

8 miles/hour * X hours = 12 m

So X = 12/8 = 1.5

1.5 hours is 90 minutes

Adam ran at 6 miles per hour

6 miles/hour * X hours = 12 m

So X = 12/6 = 2

2 hours is 120 minutes.

Adam ran 120 minutes, steve ran 90 minutes. Adam took 30 minutes longer than steve to run the race.

steve runs 8 miles an hour. adam runs 6 miles an hour. in a race of 12 miles, that'd be steve: 12/8 and adam:12/6. Steve runs the race in 1.5 hours while Adam runs it in 2 hours. "Minutes longer" is simple subtraction... Steve is 90 minutes while Adam is 120 minutes. 120-90=30, so the answer would be thirty minutes longer

hope this helped!

12 miles/6 miles/hour - x minutes = 12 miles/ 8 miles/hour

2 hours - x minutes = 1.5 hours

0.5 hours = x minutes

0.5 hours x 60 minutes/hour = x minutes

30 minutes = x
