"it seems that women like being in their places"
Ahem, what do you mean by that? Don't tell me you're one of those people who believe in forcing women to be in the kitchen and forcing men to be in the workplace.
No, I don't think we benefit from patriarchy.

I don't mind being the caretaker of my children, or doing the cooking and cleaning - mainly because my husband is so inept at it. As long as he works his butt off to keep us well off and continues to be an emotionally supportive and loving husband and father, I have no problem with where I am. It's a compromise - he works and takes care of the finances and I take care of our home. A bit old fashioned, maybe - but it works for us. He in no way forces me to "stay in the kitchen" - he has been encouraging me to go to college and improve myself.
As far as patriarchy in the government - I have no interest in government anyhow, whether it's a man or woman in the whitehouse has no consequence to me. I'm not worried about the rest of the country. I'm more concerned with my immediate family and my own life to worry about what they are doing.
GUNS: How do women have more rights than men? Last time I checked the laws are the same for everyone - although the court system is at times wrongfully more lenient on women. Equality should work on all fronts - same pay for the same jobs and the same punishments for the same crimes.
PHIL: We earned our rights, freedoms, and standards of living by being HUMAN. Must I remind you that without women, men would not exist? Do you have the same attitude about your mother that you do about the rest of women not deserving any rights?

Other than sexual adventures, the only benefactor of a dominant relationship is the dominator...whether those relations are in government, business, or personal.
Your statement "women like being in their 'places' " shows mind-blockage...a simple case of learned ignorance, and highly changeable--if the spirit so moves you to embark on the challenge. Just to let you know...ignorance, left to it's own, becomes stupidity...is that something you wish to reflect of Self???
Of course, Some women benefit from a Patriarchal rule--esp. those with low esteem, those that don't care to be part of the creative-force, those who are content to be controlled...Just as "some" men benefited from the Matriarchal rule--esp. those that were positioned as breeders. But these represent the "few" of both reigns.
Think on this...what kind of rule would create the ideal "if all do well, all do well"...what kind of human mgmt system would best reflect the balance it requires to survive??? Positive thinking, Sweetness!!!

I don't think that women "like their place" underneath the foot of their husband or father at all. It's really more of a question of what they're used to. If they're presented no alternative, of course they assume that the situation they're currently in is the ONLY situation that's possible.
Basically, all it takes for women to rise up is for them to decide that they don't like the way men are running things. It's not anything more elaborate than that. It's just the idea that things COULD be different.
You could say that the only reason patriarchies trump matriarchies in the worlds' cultures is because men know that they want to be in power, and they don't want for it to change. In a hypothetical matriarchial situation, you'd find that men are more in favor of change and women are more in favor of tradition. It's just like the socioeconomic classes. The goals of the people on top are to stay on the top and to keep everyone else beneath them.

True gender-equality, one that begins from the principle that the masculine and the feminine are equally valuable, and derives the rest from that, is a bit of a juggling-act of incommensurables. The assumptions and internal logics of the two are not compatible, but living together forces compromises and tolerations.
___I don't think that a true patriarchy is any better than a matriarchy. Men and women need one another, if they are to share a FULLY human experience.

I love the incongruity of the answers.
Patriarchy is bad until it comes to protecting women and giving them rights, freedoms and a standard of living they did nothing to earn. Even then, the vilification continues.
If the patriarchy is so bad, why aren't those opposed trying to return to Africa where life supposedly originated, live in grass huts and live off the land?

Simple logic; if a woman believes she can benefit from patriarchy she will submit herself to that ideal; the trick is submitting to the theory itself, to believe in its most inner core.
If so-said woman can not do the above it is wiser for her not to.

We've lived in a male dominated society for a few hundred years now and look at the sewer we exist in - look at how the rest of the world sees us - look at our youth - look at our so-called values - watch as we continue to flush ourselves down the toilet. That's what we got and will continue to get - from patriarchy.
Now ask yourself, how could we improve?

No, they certainly do not benefit from a male-dominated society.
Think of their earnings, number one. Even after all these years of emancipation, women still earn far less.
They are still expected to be the primary caregivers of their children, they are still expected to keep a clean and tidy home and they are also expected to help the former "breadwinners" of our society bring in the bucks!

Women are benefiting from the civilization which was, primarily, built by men. But now, having been given the rights and opportunities to do so, we are contributing to that civilization and doing our very best to make it even better.
