Sounds to me like you have some lifters tapping or a bearing on the tensioner pulley getting ready to seize up

I just took my Ford Ranger to the dealer for the same thing and they said it was the drive shaft and the tire rods. Sounds like the same problem. My Ranger is a 2000.
