I don't remember it exactly, I saw it at the end of last school year during a trip to the local college campus. My first description would be to call it a tree, but I'm not even sure if it is a tree. I don't remember much about the branches or trunk or anything, but it did not have many leaves, was fairly tall, and had these huge white flowers on it. The flowers were by themselves, not in groups, and each was about as big as my hand if not bigger. I don't remember how many there were, but not very many. The flowers smelled really really good and the scent was strong. It was planted next to a walkway kinda against a wall.

I don't know much of anything about plants, I hope my probably-distorted memory of the plant is enough for somebody to help me put a name to it. Thanks!

The plant was taller than me, but I don't remember by how much, although I think might have been more than a foot or two taller? (I'm 5'6")

Also, the white flowers were almost like large waterlily flowers (but I think maybe the petals were larger and more round/oval shaped?), but I don't know if that helps.

I say it was a Magnolia tree. Perhaps, grandiflora, a.k.a. Souther Magnolia. It has pure white flower and strong scent. Or, it might be a different one. There are so many white flower Magnolia.

If it was growing up against a wall, it could be a moonflower, which is vining and has large leaves and large white fragrant flowers. Check the link below to see if that is it...

Sounds like a perennial hibiscus or a Rose of sharon which is in the hibiscus family. Do you remember how tall it was?

Rose of sharon:

EDIT: it could be a magnolia, but it would be a very young one. Magnolias are rather large trees with waxy leaves.
Here is a pic for comparison:
