multiply all terms by the least common multiple (35) to get rid of those fractions. that leaves you with
21x-105 = 5x + 175
add 105 to both sides
21x=5x + 280
subtract 5x from both sides
16x = 280
divide both sides by 16
x=17.5

(3/5)x - 3 = (1/7)x + 5?
(3/5)x - (1/7)x = 5 + 3
(21/35)x - (5/35)x = 8
(16/35)x = 8
16x = 8 * 35
16x = 280
x = 16/280 = 4/70 = 2/35
x = 2/35
