Hi everyone, RScott and I were wondering what you grew up calling the Armadillidium vulgare. We thought it would be interesting to find out if different cultures and countries had different names for them. If you don't know what that is then you may recognize it by a few of it's nicknames like Pill bug, Roley Poley, or Tiggy Hog. I for one called it a Roley Poley. What did you call it?

I was born in Salem, Oregon. In the Northeast, we called them Potato Bugs. Some people also called them Pill Bugs.

My parents were born and raised in Mississippi. They called them Doodle Bugs.

My grandmother (also from Mississippi) taught me a rhyme so when we visited her, I played with them.

I would try to make them come out of their home (underground). They were very hard to get to come out of their underground home.

What you would do is this - you would take a piece of straw (or a long piece of dried grass, etc.) and put in the "doodle bugs" hole. Then, you would recite: "Doodle bug, doodle bug, your house is on fire, come out, come out, where ever you are..." and this was *supposed* to get the doodle bug to crawl out on the piece of straw or long piece of dried grass and then you could play with them.

By the way, when I lived in Virginia and Maryland, they were called Roley Poley's.

What an eyeopener!! I didn't even know they had them in England. Here in Florida, at least 60 years ago, we called them Doodle Bugs and I didn't know any other names for them until people from other states began moving into our area in the 50's.
