You have a Duit or Stuiver from the Netherlands United East India Company usually just called the Dutch East India company. They were used in Ceylon as well as the East Indies. The VOC monogram became a familiar site to the merchants of the Sub-Continent. The were struck from 1660 to 1790's or there abouts. In this weeks Coin World there is an ad from a Canadian coin company selling the Duits for $5.45 each or 10 different for $49.45. If the coin is a stuiver it would say so on the reverse the non monogrammed side. Even though not very rare it is a piece of history and could have bought a drink in a bar in Borneo or Malaysia. With the lion on the reverse it is most likely a Duit.

It really is kind of hard to say without a picture.

I am not positive but it sounds like it might be from the Netherlands. It sounds like several Dutch coins I bought a couple of weeks ago. You could look on eBay for something that looks like that.

The ones I bought only averaged $3.00 apiece.
