Do you know how a syringe sucks up a liquid??? The engine sucks air the same way. By a piston moving down in a cylinder and creating a low pressure area, the air is sucked into the cylinder to fill the area>

An engine is basically a big air pump. In through the carb and out through the exhaust.

Air is needed for combustion with fuel, so the car will suck air through th air filter, air intake, throttle body and into the engine where it is compressed, combined with fuel and then spark plugs ignite it.
