I am a California native and just graduated from college. I am ready to try out a new place to live and since my boyfriend is from the East coast, I thought it would be cool to check it out. I have been to both cities but only did the touristy things. I have been to New York but it was the exact opposite of CA for me and wasn't really feeling it. Any suggestions as to which city would be better to move to for a first timer?

I would suggest you do some searches on city comparisons for what items may concern you the most, such as crime rate, schooling (costs and test results), unemployment rate, mil rate (if your looking to buy a house), and/or anything else you may help you make a decision. Don't rely on any single person's response because most likely they are going to be biased. You'll even get people saying Philly because they are in the baseball playoffs.

Hubby's from Philly and most of his family is trying to get to the suburbs. Car in surance is sky high, they have around 300 murders this year so far. On the up side, there is a lot to do, if you are a sports or cheesteak fan you are in heaven but as a frequent DC visitor you will probably encounter many of the same issues in DC plus the whole security thing. Traffic is a nightmare in both cities. I'm really a NYC fan because of the 24 hour vibe, the different districts, food, garment, china town. I agree with the poster that said to check out the cost of living and how it pertains to you.

I lived in Philly for almost 10 years and loved it! I now live in Florida but make it a point to go back at least once a year. If you are interested in living in the city, check out the areas around Rittenhouse Square...a bit pricey but you can still find some good deals a few blocks away. If you are looking into being away form downtown, look in Bucks county, or in King of Prussia. KoP has a great mall if you like to shop.

Good luck with your move to whichever city you choose!
