im really bad with word problems, so i have no clue how to figure out an equation for this problem.

heres the problem.
Megan bought four times as many pencils as erasers. pencils cost $.04 each, and erasers cost $.19 each. If megan spent $2.10 in all, how many pencils did she buy?

this is what i have so far as my equation.

2.10= 4(.04x)+ .19.........

i dont know what comes after the .19

Don't forget an x factoring the .19. Then you solve by combining .19x and .16x

Hi,

This is not a problem with ONE equation but TWO.

Being E the number of erasers and P the number of pencils, you know that P = 4*E

Also, you know that E times 0.19 plus P*0.04 adds to 2.10, ie,
2.10 = E*0.19 + P*0.04

Now you have a problem with two equations and two variables.

That is all I can help :-)) Good luck

The result should be 6 erasers and therefore 24 pencils.

Suppose Megan bought x erasers, so she bought 4x pencils. I suggest that you work in cents, to avoid the decimals, so the total cost is:

19x + 4 x 4x = 210, so

19x + 16x = 210, so

35x = 210, so

x = 210/35, so

x = 6, and 4x = 24.

So Megan bought 6 erasers and 24 pencils.

Hope this helps, Twiggy.

Let e be the number of erasers and p be the number of pencils. Yo have 4e = p and .04p + .19e = 2.10. Replacing p in the second equation, you have .04(4e) + .19 e = 2.10, or (.16 + .19)e = 2.10. Continue.

Let „x“ is number of erasers.
Number of pencils is „4*x“ (four times as many as erasers).

Equation:

(total cost) = (cost of one eraser) * (number of erasers) + (cost of one pencil) * (number of pencils)

2.10 = 0.19 * x + 0.04 * 4 * x
