Why was slavery important to the europeans who conquered the americans?

Who else was going to tend to the chores of the farmlands? Who else was going to grow rich from the kidnapping of the slaves from their countries and the selling of them to white trash?
Who else was going to do menial tasks the Europeans didn't want to do?

That's why.

Slavery was more common in the southern states because the crops grown there, especially tobacco and cotton, required a great deal of labor to cultivate and harvest. Labor was always in short supply in the colonies, and slaves seeemd a natural solution. It also provided a profitable trade to the merchant fleets of the European powers.

Without the machinery we see today, agriculture was very labor intensive. Even today we need (or want to keep costs down) immigrant labor to farm. The work of finding, clearing and transporting crops was impossible without a cheap source of labor. The only farming that could be done without "extra" labor, was called subsistence farming. A farmer could do just enough to support him and keep his family alive. That was no benefit to the Europeans who financed the travel to the Americas so it was necessary for them to find a cheap source of labor to work the fields.

When Europe was settled that source of labor was serfs.

Because there weren't enough Europeans to support the agrarian society that developed and produce the crops that produced the riches they wanted and they discovered that Native Americans tended to die in captivity; plus it was hard to catch enough of them to do any good, because they fought back.

The Europeans had never seen people before who looked like the new people did and so considered the new people to be very different. They convinced themselves that the people were "more animal than human" as a way to excuse treated them like animals. (I wrote that as though I'm not European myself)
