Apparently there was some outcry from the Philipines about it.

One of the main characters was visiting a hospital or Doctor's office and for some reason asked for the credentials of the people treating here, saying something like, 'I want to make sure they didn't get their degrees from a medical school in the Philippines". I didn't actually see the episode...strange...

Well, let me tell you that would never ever happen in a Philippine Hospital or be portrayed on a Philippine network station. Here in the Philippines we are not ractist like Americas are. I know this can't happen because foreigner's are not allowed to have Professional Licensure from the PRC, even if they are born in the Philippines they must have a Filipino parent. Filipinos don't need the racism in American and should just come home were they are loved and wanted.

..........
Besides the show was showing a crazy woman. I mean it wasn't saying that a person needs to look at licenses to make sure folks are not filipino degree holders (which by the way many American's have degress from the PI), but to show how crazy patietns can be in a hospital. If they were actually trying to portray a racist she would look at their faces, and not at their licenses.

As my Mother would say, no-one's useless, they can always serve as a example.

I am not a Filipino.
I do not think that this is racist at all. I do think it's funny and maybe a little insulting to the Filipino's but come on don't you guys make the same sort of jokes on your shows.
We had a Filipina actress/singer do a show here in Australia, this week. During her talk session she made fun of the Aussie accent was this racist, heck no, was it funny sure was.

It's a pity that Filipino's can't get this agitated about the political scene in their country.

Are fake Diplomas, certificates etc. obtainable for a fee in the Philippines. If, as I think, they are then maybe this is what the show is having a go at. And , if this is so, shouldn't all this indignation be aimed at this situation.

underneath is the link from the fox news website. I think it was crazy. i live here in the US and on a local radio station they actually asked for Filipino listeners to call in and tell them what they thought about the "slur". being half- i was upset at some of the callers for saying it wasn't a slur- even when they themselves were Filipino- or even half like me. I guess some of them didn't understand how bad it made Filipino medical workers look. Filipinos in my area have a GREAT name because of the their work in the medical field. that people think they are very friendly and hardworking- but now it seems as if they discredited all the oversea workers from the Philippines in the medical field.

i personally thought it was crazy! especially because i want to go to medical school in the philippnies- i took it a little personally

There are a lot of Filipino nurses in the U.S. (especially California) so I can't help but think that the line was a jab at their perceived incompetence by the writers of Desperate Housewives.

As the son of a Philippine-educated nurse, I am offended.

I totally agree with Chuck on this one.

How many times have we Filipinos made fun of Indians (from India, or more commonly known as "bombays")? Whenever portrayed on TV they're always sterotypically shown as this guy who smells like yesterday's diapers. How messed up is this? And what is being done to change this? Nothing. But Indians take this with humor and move on.

We Filipinos should stop acting like crybabies.

it wasn't a racial slurr. susan just said that she wanted to make sure that her doctor hadn't gotten his diploma from the philipines.

Its just stupid. Some people just HAVE to be offended by something at all times or they are not happy. Most people I think would want a doctor educated in a civilized society instead of in a 3rd world country.
