lol! i know everyone probably thinks i'm like 15 years old, but i'm really 21, and i'm just not clear on the definition of an open relationship! so thanks for your answers in advance!

Open relationship is a generic term for any non-monogamous activity between a committed couple. This can be swingers, it can be polyamorous couples, it can be couples who are fee to date others independently of the other (which is not swinging since they are not doing it together as a couple). So all these are types of open relationships, but the term "open relationship" does not accurately describe in detail any of the types listed above (and more).
More importantly, a relationship is what you make of it, not what other people tell you it should be. What works for them may not, and in many cases will not, work for others. So never let anyone tell you that your type of relationship is wrong. It may be wrong for them, but that does not make it wrong for everyone.

Maybe some open relationships are swingers but it's basically when you are with one person mainly but allowed to see other people on the side.

An open relationship means the relationship you have with someone isn't exclusive to that person. So that person you have the relationship with is the main person in your life, but you are allowed to have other intimate relationships with other people. Every open relationship is different, it all depends on the rules the couple sets down for theirs. An example of this is to say Bob and Janet are a couple with an open relationship. So, both Bob and Janet can date and/or have sex with other people, all depending on what the terms of their open relationship are, but even if they do stuff like this with other people Bob and Janet remain a couple. So Janet is still more important to Bob than anyone else he might get with, and Bob is still more important to Janet than anyone she might get with.

It means that you both have agreed to either date or see other people or have sex with other people, no it doesn not mean that you are a swinger, a swinger is someone who shares their partner sexually with someone and they are having sex with the other persons partner.

some what, It means that you both date each other, but that you are both open to dating other people as well. Not the kind of relationship I'm looking for.

It means buckle up, the relationship is gonna get pretty scary- yup -kinda swingin', but just dating others as though you are single, and then getting together because you and your partner are "so in love"- not like swingin' where the couples swap partners.

Yes, it means you can have sex and date others. Is this more of your bf asking you to be an exotic dancer? Are you sure this guy is treating your relationship with loyalty and respect?
