I've just moved to my university hostel. I've got a laptop and i've tried to use wireless internet. The signal strength is excellent (all signal strength bar is full). But when i start the internet it just shows that dull page saying "cannot open the page blah blah blah...". What do i do now?

ask the network administrator at the uni if you have to change your computer ip address or to use a proxy server

You may need to have access into the campus wireless network. Your laptop can "see" the network, but it cannot "access" the network. I would start by talking to your RA (Residential Advsior) or the campus IT team. Your RA should have a point of contact for the IT team or might even have the connection info.

You probably need to login using a set username and password given to you by the school. Most schools do that so people not affiliated with the school can't use the internet. Try asking someone in the IT department there. Best of luck.

Are you permitted to access that site? Try a general site and see if this is any better.

If not, can you ping a DNS server or default gateway? Open command prompt (start, run - type cmd and hit enter).

In command prompt type in "ipconfig /all" without quotes. You should see your ip address and the default gateway address and other addresses. Now in command prompt type in "ping " without quotes with being the ip address of the default gateway (e.g. ping 192.168.0.1 if 192.168.0.1 is the default gateway) and hit enter. You should see 4 positive replies; if not you have a config problem. Get config help.

If all is OK, in command prompt type in "ping 4.2.2.2" without quotes and hit enter. You should receive 4 responses; if not there is a router problem that you need to have someone fix.

If all is OK, in command prompt type in "ping yahoo.com" without quotes, and hit enter. You should receive 4 responses; if not there is a problem connecting to a DNS server; have someone address this.

This tells you if there is a connection problem and where it is. Armed with this info you should easily get assistance to fix it.
