I think two of the greatest bands to form out of a situation like this would have to be Audioslave (RATM and Soundgarden) and Velvet Revolver (GnR and STP).
They stay true to their roots and still incorporate their fellow member's styles.

Queens of the Stone Age. They've got that whole Nine Inch Nails thing going on, with one consistent member, and guys from other bands joining for awhile. I like that, though it's hard to keep up....
