My son is having a horrible time with his spelling words. We go over them again and agian.. do home tests... He writes them 20 times each now at daycare b/c 5 & 10 times he wasnt getting them.. And does pyramids with them at home. And yet still his last 3 test have been failing. (10, 60, 60)

He can spell the 6 to 8 letter words with no problem ... It seems like the smaller words he is having problems with.

I am at a loss of what to do now. Please anyone that has any info please help me.

I am not blaming him for it.. I just didnt know if anyone else had any other methods of teaching and learning them that maybe I could do..

I have had him tested in school and asked teacher and the same answer every time.. "It is common at this age"

I'm sure I'm wrong, but is it too early to check for a learning disorder?

Look online for the Spelling Text Twist game. You can also buy the "Mind Station" for it. This is all by Leapfrog. The Mind station actually lets you download your childs spelling words to a cartridge that you put into the Text Twist game. The game has several different game options like missing letter, spell it, and others. My daughter had horrible spelling tests. This was a fun way for her to practice. We would download on Friday night and she would practice all week till the Friday test at school. Definate improvement. They also have other games for math, science, etc.

When you say smaller words, are you talking about high frequency words such as: are, our, that, like, there, etc? How about trying flash cards? I sometimes use them in my classroom when children are having a hard time learning the high frequency words that they should know just by looking at them and not decoding them (sounding it out, breaking it down). If they are words that are a little bigger, you can have him try looking for "words within a word." For example: together.... to- get- her. I teach my children to break up the word and look for other words that they already know in the word. This helps them because they really put it to practice when figuring out words that they don't know. Good luck!!!

Hi, sometimes it does not take repeating and looking them over. What use to help me alot was breaking down the word into smaller words. Like:

Population. Pop-u-la-ti-on. They were tricks I use to do. I did this though because I had processing problems. He might have trouble processing the words in his head. Kids with this also have a hard time seeing things clearly in their head.

You may want to have him tested. I was tested in 3rd grade. Good luck!

he may have dyslexia-it is a possible answer to the problem(and a very common learning disorder)-have him checked for it -im sure that he is just as frustrated by this as you are.just remember that together you will get through it and that it's no one's fault. things will fall into place for him-hang in there:)

oh you could try flash cards-they've helped my 2nd grader learn a lot of harder words as well as math!

have you had his hearing tested. I have trouble spelling beacuse I have trouble hearing. I am not sure what else you can do. I know finger spelling and that helps me rememeber how to spell some words.
