i dont think that it is going to matter if you take the class or not. 99% of the people i spoke to when i was pregnant says it doesnt help. i chose not to. but if you think that deep down it may help you go for it. just do what the doctor tells you and you will be fine. :) but i do recommend you get an epideral, if it is available. i did. it helped more than anything.

I read nearly everything I could get my hands on, including some fairly obscure stuff I found in my local uni library, so I found the classes pretty boring. However, there was one really useful thing each time that made it worth my while to drag myself there. Unless you are doing a LOT of reading, and I don't mean just baby related websites, you should definately go. Statistically, the people most in need of information (low income/education and young mums) are least likely to attend the classes, but these are the people the classes are most aimed at. You really ought to go. Forewarned is forearmed. If you don't, you'll be on here in a few months time asking basic questions and telling us how petrified you are because you don't know what's going on :) Take your fella if you have one, or take your mum/grandma/friend. That's what everyone else does.
You've spent years at school studying stuff that doesn't matter a whole lot. Well pregnancy, labour and child raising do matter, so you should put in even more effort to become informed and able to make sensible decisions. Don't just "do what the doctor tells you" like someone else recommended. If you become informed, you don't have to hand over responsibility and power like that. It's your body and your baby, so it is your responsibility to do what's right for you. If you are informed, you'll know what you think is best. Believe me, doctors don't always give the right info. They are not the boss, you are the boss. There's only two reasons to do what a doctor tells you 1. You think they are right. 2. You've no idea what is right despite having tried to find out, so just have to trust them. Oh I'm disgusted with that answerer. Go to the midwives clinic, they are much better than doctors. They don't try and medicalise everything and mostly leave you alone to do your thing. My diabetes educator (gestational diabetes) wanted to put me on insulin which I didn't even need. I didn't take it, I just put more effort into controlling my diet.

I plan to take pregnancy classes. I'm also 21 weeks. My husband and I are taking a 4-week course (1 day a week, 3 hours a day) at the end of November. I think the courses will be very helpful for a first-time mom.

Take the class, take the class, take the class. And watch television shows like Maternity Ward, which follows the action in hospitals around the country, capturing both the medical and human drama of childbirth. The show airs on The Learning Channel (TLC) Monday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

I highly recommend taking a birthing/parenting class.
I found it very useful first just to teach me things that I had never thought about and being a first time mom myself...had no clue about...but also
I found it very comforting to know what I was in for regarding birthing...things are alot less scary when you know what to expect.
ABSOLUTELY take a birthing/parenting class, maybe one of each...and make sure that you don't wait too long...people always say to wait until the 8th month or so to take a class...in my expierence...everyone that waited that long in my class...missed the end because they went into labor...
I took my class 10 weeks from my due date and I was able to finish my class.
Good Luck and Congratulations!!
*** I also read every book I could get my hands on and I also signed up for www.babycenter.com and had regular articles sent to my email...I just couldn't get enough info

A childbirth class is very valuable if you plan on having or trying a natural birth or even if you are just interested in all the things that could happen to you during birth so that you can make informed decisions about any kinds of interventions that are offered to you (episiotomy, c-section, etc.). I think they are great for first-time moms just so you know what you can expect.

Its really helpful to go to a class to learn about labor and etc. They also give u some tips of what you need to do while you are in labor and etc. If you dont want to go class then you dont have too.
I was a first time mother on February 15th 2007..i decided that i didnt want to go into the classes..plus my schedule was so busy that i couldnt fit a class time in at all.

I think any preparation you do is beneficial to you and the baby. I've read just about every book I can get my hands on and we're taking a labor and baby care class. Now the labor part of the class is really kind of useless, in my opinion. Your body will know what to do, and you can read up on coping methods etc....
The baby care class I think will be most beneficial, how to soothe a crying baby etc....
It's up to you, if you don't take the classes I would definitely go to library/bookstore and start reading, it's always better to be prepared. :-)

It is not neccessary to take these classes, however if it is your first child it is recommended, for it will make your labor not as scary. You are able to learn alot of relaxation techniques while in labor and different excercises to make your labor easier. This also gives an opportunity for your significant other or spouse to get involved with the pregnancy.

I am taking them as well. I absolutely adore babies but ever since I found out I am pregnant I have become terrified to touch them, I dont want to hurt them....I dont know why I am scared all of a sudden, I never have been before, but I am taking them just to reassure myself! I am 19, so I understand how scary it is to be a first time young mom! Good luck and congrats!
