I personally don't believe that mental illness exists as it is defined in psychology and psychiatry, but I do think that being unable to cope or handle "normal" situations exists among a lot of people.

Most menal illness diagnosed today is done so to peddle medications, therefore the doctors have an incentive to find things wrong with you that might not be there. Think about this, if you tell a doctor that you obsess over your bed being made or your hands being clean, are you just a neat person or do you require anti-anxiety meds? I have worked in mental health and have a BA in psych and I have yet to find a person that I think is untreatable without meds. it is sad actually what the drugging of our youth is doing to america

Of course mental illness exists, mental illness has been proved to have existed as far back as The Roman empire to explain the behavior of Callegidaa who was Emperor back before Christ was born. You have a heck of a lot of examples of instances of mental illness all through out history. The difference between now and than is that now we know more about what causes mental illness than we did back than.If you have ever read any books on English history or romances during the Georgian stage of history when King George (who was on the throne of England during the American Revolution) he was considered the "Crazy King" Do you think that they called him that for no reason? There were and are a lot of reasons that people develop mental illnesses. Some of it could genetic, some of it could because by illnesses such as syphilis and other things. Some of the illnesses could be caused by chemical imbalances with in the brain or changes caused by a traumatic brain injuries. But for as long as there been people I'm pretty sure that there has been some type of mental illness. A lot of times people also used to think that the mentally ill were possessed by demons because they couldn't find any other reason for their behaviors, they had to find something else to contribute the behaviors to. So they used demons and other things that would explain what at that time was to them unexplainable.

Is there a difference?

A lot of mental illness is in fact a mind being unable to deal with things As They Are (tm).

But there are some that are due to chemical imbalances in the brain.

Mental Illness is very real. I've seen a lot of very sad examples of it.

Of course it does. People with Down's symdrome and autistic people are faking it? There are many forms of mental illness, I have been fighting depression and panic attacks for many years, and believe me, it's not fun. Mental illness can come in many forms. I believe in some cases, you are born with it, in some ways, it's caused by genetics, and in other cases a result of the environment you were brought up in. People who diss mentally ill people are just under-educated about it and can't put themselves in another's place.

Yes. Those two questions are not exclusive of one another. The inability to deal with normal, everyday societal behavior causes mental illness. Mental illness causes the inability to deal with normal, everyday societal behavior.

Mental illness is a proven condition based from science and chemical imbalances within ones brain; however, I do believe that many have the capability of taking advantage and using this condition to their benefit, but that is with anything.

Both, not all mental illness is demon possession and not all demon possession act like they are mentally ill. Yet it does - want proof - look at Congress they are loaded with people who suffer from mental illnesses.

I think it's both.
I know people who are mentality disabled (learning disabilities who aren't lying when they can't remember what they ate for lunch...) I also know A LOT of people who claim to have problems who were never taught how to deal with problems.

There sure are a lot of sickos out there. I'd say they were unable to deal with life.

Both. Drug companies are happy to sell drugs to people. So of course, diagnosing people for drugs is promoted.

I know there are some with chemical problems.

But, I think many people just need a good ol' back hand and quit being a wussy.
