Sometimes a slow Wi-Fi network is caused by interference.such as a microwave or a cordless phone. Or you could be on a crowded channel. The channel can be changed via your router's configuration page.. I read this in an article in PC World magizine. They gave a web address to find more troubleshooting ideas. .page.http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,129075/article.html

Let's clarify some things here.

Your wireless connection, if it is 802.11 g, will run at 54 Mbps between the wireless access point at your house and your pc if you have no interference or signal weakness that would slow this down. As you go away from the access point, this speed drops - and if the wireless signal has to penetrate walls or other blockages, it drops more.

This speed is NOT your Internet speed. It is substantially less. If you have DSL the download speed can be 0.768 - 3.0 Mbps. If you have CATV, the download speed can be as high as 6 Mbps. Clearly these are well below the 54 Mbps speed of the LAN. Further this is allocated among all users. If you have a 1.0 Mbps download and 2 people are downloading large files, you will each see approx. 0.5 Mbps. If your wireless connection is not secured you may have freeloaders hogging a lot of your bandwidth - which makes capacity available to you even less.

Your observed download speed is governed by the Internet speed available to you (including its sharing with other users) unless your wireless connection is extremely weak.

In your case, I suspect the internet speed at your friend's house is faster and has fewer users among which to allocate capacity. I further suspect the speed between your pc and your wireless point is NOT the critical issue.

Move your notebook into the same room as the wireless access point. Make sure no one else is on your network using bandwidth (invoke wireless security to kick off freeloaders), and see if this makes things better.

they say (as in the service provider) that it depends how far you are from the mast/aeriel they use, it also depends on the strength of your phone line that you signed up with. I have 100mbps and so does my brother (that's what we brought pay the same price for) but the most my brother has ever got is 56mbps while mine has stayed at 100 mbps ever since I got wifi first installed. which is kinda weird considering he's closer to the mast than my house. So its more than likely the strength of the line.

There is obviously something wrong with your computer. Drag the cursor to the right hand lower corner and look for a little network icon. Pass over it and see what the ACTUAL connect speed is and then right click on it and do a REPAIR
