no it doesn't damage his teeth. it is a soothing mechanism for babies. it doesn't affect his permanent teeth either. babies sometime do this until they turn one, sometimes longer. there is no "cure" for it but if it makes you feel better you could take him to visit a pediatric dentist. thumb sucking is the worst thing for infants/toddlers teeth next to sugar. if that is going on then consult your family dentist.
p.s. I work for a pediatric dentist and my daughter did it when she was smaller...

Teeth grinding is normal for toddlers because they are teething and their gums hurt.
Normally grinding does not damage baby teeth, and is rarely considered a problem until age 5 or 6.

My dd did this too, around 8 months. My pediatrician said this is what people mean when they say "cutting teeth". Baby is literally using his first 2 bottom teeth to help the top teeth come in. It's normal, and baby will stop once his teeth are in...until he teethes again.
To comfort him, try Hyland's Teething Tablets http://www.hylands.com/products/teething.php You can find them at Publix, Giant, Walmart, Target, etc.
Also, my dd likes frozen carrots, celery, broccoli stalks (not the tops) and frozen washcloths. We've never needed those plastic teething toys (that are usually made in China...you know about that whole scare of course)

My son does this too. Started around the same time. I distract him by blowing a puff of air in his face, this makes him laugh and stops him from grinding his teeth. This seems to distract him just enough that he will forget about his teeth and go on to something else.

7 years ago I've been involved in a car wreck and even since suffered with severe on and off facial and jaw pain. I've tried almost everything western medicine had to offer and had visited countless of specialist, had done ct scans, and therapies but to no avail. The doctors I have been to had persisted that there wasn't anything wrong with me and that almost drove me crazy as I was going through hell from this condition. According to all my symptoms I was diagnosed by a holistic doctor as having TMJ and he had recommended this book to me. After following the recommendation in the book for several weeks, it had changed my life. I got immediate relief after following the unique set of exercises in the book and after 2 weeks the jaw and face pain had completely gone. I only wish I would have ordered this program years ago. It would have saved me a lot of pain and anguish.

Mine also did that for the longest time. I forget exactly how old he was though. It would drive me crazy. It sounded like s/one taking their fingernails and scratching them on the chalkboard. I thought he would grind them off too or chip them, but they never did and now he is 2. I guess it feels good for them to do that when they are cutting teeth. He finally quit doing that & I was so thankful. Plus he knew it bothered me too. Good luck, it will soon pass too.

he will be fine. Its a new sensation, he needs to explore what his teeth can do. Be sure to give him plenty of things to chew on to try out his teeth!

It is called Bruxism and is normal. Also, don't use Hyland's teething tablets - they contain caffeine.
