Essentially laws are pretty straight forward and clear by definition. Some laws are a bit less clear and ambiguous.

In this case whatever the offense involving mischief, it was somewhat unclear if the actual law was broken by true definition. The court makes a ruling based upon the "meaning" of the law itself based upon circumstances and states that even though the law was a bit unclear, circumstances surrounding the case were a violation by the courts interpretation of the law.
