It really depends on where you live.

Your jurisdiction should have an employment standards website where you can access the relevant legislation on your employment rights. Read it over. You will either have to take your employer to court, report them to an employment standards board of some sort, or take them to an administrative tribunal.

You should get a lawyer if you have a history of discriminatory behaviour by your employer, and plenty of evidence.

If you don't have a lot of money or the dismissal involves smaller amounts of money (a couple thousand or hundred bucks), see if there's a law school in your area. Most law schools have legal aid clinics that do employment contracts work.

Honestly, though in my area employees are protected by a lot of rights, wrongful termination or dismissal cases usually aren't worth that much money - a few hundred or thousand. Then again, maybe you have a great case for discrimination or similar.

I would think the appeal process within a private firm was based upon the firms policies!
