i heard someone use it the other day and didnt think it was correct, however didnt want to be rude and correct them, sp how would other people use the word?

Well, according to my old dictionary, the word can be used a couple of ways, one being persuasive and effective: Example: The rhetoric in that ad made me hungry.

The other meaning is practically the opposite, "pretentious or insincere"... you can make a sentence for that.

Then there's a style of speaking or writing: Example: His speech writer knew the correct rhetoric but the speaker didn't deliver it well.

And of course, in a class by itself, a 'rhetorical question' is simply one that requires no answer at all.

Taking a course in rhetoric greatly increased my public speaking skills.
