Why do they really need 6 umps?

They always bring in more umpires for the playoffs. Playoffs are more intense, close calls are more scrutinized, therefore more eyes on the field monitoring the various rules of the game make for even more accurate calls. There is the home plate umpire, 1B umpire, 2B umpire, 3B umpire, LF line umpire, RF line umpire. Normally the 1B or 3B umpire will run down the lines on foul balls to see if a ball is fair or foul. In the postseason, they add the LF and RF umpires so the 1B and 3B can remain close to the infield.

I don't think they do at all. It is probably just a way to get 1/3 more umpires some post season work. They still seem to have an annoying tendancy to not hustle and be out of position. On the Pads - Rockies playoff the other night one of the announcers was pointing out how close the left and right field umps were to the 3rd and 1st base umps, maybe 20-30 feet behind them. It would seem to make more sense for them to be down the line a bit more to get out to a close call on a catch or even more important a close homerun call like the one the other night.

I think they are trying to tell us that they really can't do it correctly with four in the regular season.
