Depends on geography, number of people in the family, unforeseeable expenses, etc.

A family bringing in $200,000 a year could be middle class if they live in a big city and have 4 children who are all suffering from severe medical problems, have car and mortgage payments, etc.

A rural family could bring in $40,000 a year and be middle class if they have one child, own their home and vehicles, grow some of their own food and live frugally.
