No, enough said. You don't get picked as captains of the Yankees for no reason. He has the heart and determination and can play ball too. He isn't necessarily the MVP, but he pulls his weight and does his job as captain.

No, he is not overrated. How can a lifetime .318 hitter who will no doubt join the 3000 hit club be considered overrated? One need only look at the teams success and realize that Jeter was a major part of that success. I've read the other answers and have noticed how people who are not particularly fond of Jeter try and justify their dislike for him. Let them analyze all they want. Sure, there might be better shortstops in the game today and perhaps A-Rod is one but the last time I checked A-Rod is a 3rd baseman, not a shortstop.....today, now!
Anyone willing to dig deep enough into the stat book can find whatever they want about any player.......good or bad! The only stat that means anything is championships and I see Jeter with 4 rings!
Derek Jeter is a hall of famer. Those who are looking for excuses...........get over it!!

Everything jeter does is blown out of proportion. He is a good hitter, average fielder. And here is a fact - since he was named captain - the Yankees have not won the World Series - look it up. The clubhouse has been full of bickering and back stabbing. he would not stand up for A-Rod. He has nothing useful to say - he is a boring media darling. I'd take guys like Todd Helton, Garrett Atkins or Jimmy Rollins over him - great hitters that get little or no press. Enough of Jeter, he is Mr. Boring.

It depends on who is doing the rating.
Sucky announcers like McCarver and die-hard fans think he is great defensively and has special "hitting in the clutch" abilities.
More objective observers who examine things like on-base percentage and slugging over his career find that he performs well in general, but that he doesn't have any magic "clutch" batting skills. Actually looking at stats does show us this; selective memory is what makes people think otherwise.
They also point out that a few spectacular plays don't outweigh that he has relatively limited range, an arm which isn't that powerful, and usually ranks among the bottom half of shortstops defensively. His Gold Gloves were won with his name and his bat.
He's a great player.
But Rodriguez was a much finer shortstop.
And a truly great leader would probably do more to stick up for his team's best player instead of defending the execrable Giambi and leaving Rodriguez to hang in the wind.
And the correlation of Jeter=wins has flaws. How many WS rings since they lost Paul O'Neill? Or Tito Martinez? None! So were they the true keys?
(Doubtful.)

As a pink Sox fan, i don't many times have many beneficial issues to assert appropriate to the Yankees, yet as a baseball fan i'm waiting to renowned gifted gamers. Derek Jeter is definitely not overated. He has been a good all around participant on between the excellent communities to play the game. The Yankees have not gained a international series in particularly some years yet he has been between the constants on that team. The Yankees continually change out thier gamers and purchase new expertise while they think of they choose it. funds has by no ability been a controversy. If Derek Jeter weren't well worth it, they'd have discovered somebody greater useful with the help of now. The Yankees are actually not traditionally generally used for retaining gamers out of loyalty. for people who think of he does not are growing to be as plenty interest if he weren't on the Yankees, i desire you comprehend he does not have been on the Yankees if he wasn't that good.

Ppl make the mistake of comparing him to A-ROD and automatically asuming he's overrated because he doesnt put the kind of numbers rodriguez puts up ...
number 1 : he's not a homerun hitter or much less a power hitter, he gets on base, is a percentage hitter, steals bases and scores runs....
not only that but he ... is mr. frkn clutch...
number 2: he's a great defensive player, probably the best shortstop in twenty years
number 3: he's a hard worker, great teamate, smart all around player and he isnt the captain of the yankees for no reason, the kid can play...

I was going to write an answer, but I thought, instead, just see Bucky's answer. It was great.
If you think that Jeter is the best player in the league, or even in the top 10, then yes, you are over-rating him.
If you think he is actually a gold glove shortstop (and for scubaSteve's benefit, I will say this year), then yes, you are over-rating him.
If you are comparing him to Pete Rose, who wasn't nearly as good a hitter as people make him out to be because he has 4,256 hits, then you are probably rating him correctly as long as you don't think that Rose is the greatest hitter in history.
He's good, he would be a benefit to any team for sure, but if he was truly a team player, he would have taken on a new position and let the gold glove SS play there.

At age 33, Pete Rose had 2,333 hits. Derek Jeter is 33 and has 2,356. Even though that Pete Rose guy isn't in the hall, I heard he was pretty good.
