I run a small home based business where I do sketches for people. I have been giving them the originals and making copies for myself to keep as record....Should I be doing this the other way around (Giving them a copy and myself keeping the original?) Help! I don't know if legally I should just be giving them copies .... although I would assume they would want an original sketch.

I assume you are getting paid for doing these sketches. Unless otherwise noted, the patron is paying for an original sketch. A sketch is the actual drawing. If you are taking money for a "sketch", then you send them away with the drawing you made.

If you are providing a print to your patrons, then you must make certain that a print is what they want.

Bottom line, if someone pays you for a sketch, they get the sketch...it's theirs...they paid for it. UNLESS both you and the patron agree on a print instead.

i believe you could either charge them for an original or a print. a print would have to be considerably cheaper. the people assume that they're paying for an original piece so they're not wanting a photocopy.
