Lot of people here have correct answers but got the details kinda screwed up.
The song is Without You. If you are remembering the big pop AM Radio gold record, you are remembering Harry Nilsson's version in 1972 or so. Bad Finger did write it and record it first but I'm not sure whether theirs was ever even a single. (Singles were actually singles in those days.) If you are younger perhaps you are remembering Mariah's cover.

"Without You" was originally written and sung by Badfinger on their 'No Dice' album from 1970.
However, the most famous cover of this song, the one that most people remember, is the one sung by Harry Nilsson on his 1971 album 'Nilsson Schmilsson', and which became a smash hit single in 1972. Mariah Carey also gave it a shot.

That was sung by many but I best liked the version by Harry Nilsson in 2002. He's a great singer & I also liked his song, "Me & My Arrow."
