It's a great state, but I wouldn't say it's the best in the U.S. It's a great place if you're 1) looking to discover fame, 2) want to live in year-round good weather, or 3) like to party a lot. California is very diverse with many different types of people and places. It's great for a vacation every once in a while. Just steer clear in case an earthquake or mudslide occurs. Those are the only 2 things to fear, as far as weather goes.

Oh God no, not by a long shot.
But this is an opinion based question and that is what you'll get.
Are you asking if it is the best state in which to live?
Well maybe, if you could afford to live in Lake Tahoe.
Personally, I have crossed the entire country four times and found wonderful and different qualities for every state.
My opinion; the best state is Montana and that is based on scenery and other things I cannot express with words.

God no. And the 'great year round weather' is only in Southern California. I live in the Bay Area, and it's cold and foggy most of the time. Contrary to what most people think, the entire state is not at all like Hollywood or LA. Here in Northern California, we call LA the armpit of California. It's hot, humid, and smelly. I'm moving to Oklahoma in a few months, so we get out of this expensive place! In my town you need at least 1.5million to buy a small house.(I live in Mill Valley, Ca) We're moving to a place we can buy a better house for 250!

For the record, 70% of California population live in Southern California. That's Los Angeles/San Diego area. When you think California, think SOCAL. This is the west side and we all know the west side is the best side. Dig it!

There are many great things to see or visit in the US that are not in California, but California's laws sure are unique I've heard...

No it is not. It is too crowded, smoggy, gang infested, and traffic there is a nightmare. It's one of the worst states to live in.
