I have an optical mouse that is connected to my PC via USB. However, the red light at the bottom is always on, even when my computer is turned off. Is there a way to stop this, as it must be a waste of electricity (albeit a very small waste)?

If the mouse does not turn off itself, the only way to make the light go away is to unplug the usb connection. It might be best to get another mouse, one that automatically turns off.

Here's an interesting fact. While your computer is off, it still consumes power, a very small amount, but yes, the power supply still supplies power to the motherboard, which is why most power supplies come with a switch in the rear of the computer for you to turn the power completely off. you may try that as well.

Chill dude !

Answer to your questions

1) Dont worry , its normal. My Optical mouse also would stay on even if after the shut down of my computer. This is because the power is still getting to the motherboard through power supply of your PC.

2) There is no way to stop this except to cut the power to your motherboard by turning off the main power to your system.

3) This is not a waste of electricity. Its just a feeble electricity and do not consume much. Even if you run it for a month you bill will not increase more than a ruppee.

Dont worry about it. You are not torturing your system or wasting electricity.

If the USB mouse is connected to a USB port on the motherboard directly, NO, however if you have a hub, it often auto shutdowns on PC power off.

If the systems has a standby voltage on the USB system anyway the extra use of power is NIL. The LED uses less power than the standby current will be, so will make NO DIFFERENCE

Even with your computer off there is power to the motherboard and USB 2.0 ports. It's normal. Some people even charge gaming comtrollers, digital cams, etc. on the USB ports of a computer when its turned off.
